Navasana - Boat Pose

Posture of the month – August – Boat – Navasana

Many of us feel more energised in the summer months – it feels great to take our practice outside, enjoying the fresh air, bright colours and delicious fruits in season, perhaps spending time by the sea.. Navasana is a strengthening, toning posture, which perhaps provides a bit of a challenge for us to rise to, fuelled by that wonderful summer sunshine energy!
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

From sitting tall with legs extended out in front, bend the knees, bringing feet flat on to the mat.

Exhale and lean back slightly, engaging the core muscles and lifting the feet and legs up off of the mat; keep knees and ankles together and bring shins parallel to the floor.

Lift and open the chest; lifting and lengthening the spine, using and strengthening the abdominal muscles. Stretch arms out in front, level with the knees, palms towards each other.

Focus on long, smooth breaths as you hold the posture, before gently lowering legs back down to the mat.

If we want increase the challenge, we can work on extending and straightening the legs upwards (as pictured here).
